Flamingos often stand on one leg, preferably in water. They do this for thermoregulation. By keeping one leg in the water, they can cool their bodies; if they were to stand with both legs in the water, they would lose too much body heat.
In addition, a flamingo would sink into the mud with both legs. By standing on one leg, the flamingo can, if it sinks too deep, lift itself up with the other leg, as if pulling itself free.
For both flamingos and humans, finding stability is important — and we each do it in our own way. Once you rediscover and maintain your balance, you’ll stand more firmly on your own two feet.
